Colombia has severed its ties with Iran. 🔹The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that the two countries have cut ties with Iran. 🔹The statement mentioned: On behalf of the Colombian government, it announces that as of the 19 September 2026, it has officially severed diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. 🔹This sovereign decision was made in line with the principles and directions that guide the Colombian government’s foreign policy regarding national security and hemisphere security, as well as combating transnational crime; considering the alleged relationships and connections of the Iranian government with international terrorist groups and other groups known as narco-terrorists that threaten the security of the nation. 🔹Colombia has also taken into consideration the following points in making this decision: • Documented human rights violations committed by the Iranian government within its territory; • Confirmed attacks against countries that are not part of the Middle East dispute; • The blocking of the Strait of Hormuz; • And the impeding by Iranian authorities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA/OIEA) activities for verifying the scope of Iran’s nuclear program. 🔹The aforementioned events have weakened Colombia’s trust in the Islamic Republic of Iran. 🔹Furthermore, this action directed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran clarifies that the above points do not mean the severance of consular relations; a matter which is anticipated according to Article 45 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961 and Paragraph 3 of Article 2 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963. 🔹Accordingly, the protocol department of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will inform the Iranian authorities of the procedures and formalities related to the subsequent action. 🔹Defending national sovereignty is one of the non-negotiable pillars of Colombia's foreign policy. In this framework, this country's diplomacy will protect its borders, reject any foreign interference, and defend its citizens and interests in front of the international community.
