📄 US attacks a flagrant violation of UN Charter: Iran’s top human rights body 📌 Tehran, IRNA – The High Council for Human Rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran has condemned US military strikes on multiple areas of Iran, describing them as a clear violation of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law. The body urged the United Nations and other international institutions to take effective action to halt the violations, hold perpetrators accountable, and compensate the victims. The statement, released by the Judiciary’s International Affairs Deputy, said the council condemns in the strongest terms the US military attacks against various regions of Iran on July 8 and 13, which, according to official reports, have resulted in the martyrdom and injury of dozens of Iranian citizens and extensive damage to public infrastructure and civilian property. The statement added that the attacks come at a time when Iran and the United States had reached an understanding on establishing a ceasefire and initiating a dialogue process aimed at reducing tensions, preventing escalation of hostilities and paving the way for a return to diplomacy. The recent military actions, which US officials claim were carried out on grounds of ceasefire violations, not only contradict the spirit and purpose of such an understanding but seriously undermine the mutual trust necessary for advancing peaceful solutions and adherence to the principle of good faith in implementing international obligations. The statement said that more than 250 locations across the country, mainly in southern regions, were targeted in these attacks. Reports indicate that as a result, 20 Iranian nationals, including one woman, were martyred, 150 others were injured, of whom two were women, 14 surgical operations were performed on the wounded, and 102 individuals were discharged after receiving medical treatment. In the recent attacks, several ports in southern Iran were targeted, electricity was cut in parts of Chabahar, projectiles landed near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, and railway lines, including the Aq Teke Khan railway bridge, were damaged. Targeting such facilities, if confirmed, not only disrupts citizens’ daily lives and the delivery of public services but also directly impacts human security, the right to development and access to public services. This attack is another instance of targeting civilian infrastructure whose effects directly affect ordinary people and their fundamental rights. The High Council for Human Rights emphasized that attacking civilian targets and infrastructure with a civilian nature and function clearly contradicts fundamental principles of international law, including the principle of distinction between military and civilian objectives, and customary rules of international humanitarian law. Furthermore, the protection of civilians and the immunity of vital infrastructure essential for the continuation of normal life are unquestionable obligations of states under international law, and violations of these obligations will entail the international responsibility of the offending state. The statement added that the UN Charter, particularly . . . 📲
